Located 15 kilometers away from Mathura, Gokul is the place where Lord Krishna spent the first 14 years of his life in secrecy at the place of his foster parents- Nand and Yashoda. As per the mythological story, When Devaki gave birth to her 8th son , Vasudeva, the father of Krishna, secretly exchanged him with the infant daughter of Yashoda to save him from the cruel death from the hand of Kansa. During his tenure in Gokul, Lord Krishna killed various demons and performed miracles such as lifting Govardhan Parvat and dancing on the hood of snake Kalia.
Along with that, Krishna also met his lifelong love Radha whom he never married. There are several temples dedicated to him but the most important one is Gokul Nath ji. The town is also famous as the seat of the 16th century saint Ballabhacharya. Every year festival such as Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Annakut and Trinvat Mela are performed with full zeal and enthusiasm.
